"What art means to me:

Nowadays creating artwork is a lifestyle, an intellectual process and exercise. It consumes a large portion of my day. I typically draw for 5 or 6 hours a day. 90% of which I’m not satisfied with. My background in art is Graffiti. I began graf when I was about 12 and was heavily involved in that as I got older.

If I’m not drawing, I’m jotting ideas down for other projects or doing other art related stuff. When I have my headphones on, just my body is here in prison, my mind isn’t there. I see art in everything, I observe the play of shadows from a light source, the characteristics of metal, plastic or skin etc… It’s fascinating to me.

Some of my favorite artists are the Italian masters Raphael, Da Vinci, Michelangelo, Auso. A handful of graffiti writers and several tattoo artists(Black/Grey realism artists!)."

🖋 Artist's bio

My name is Andrew Gonzales, I am from Northern California . I’m 36, been incarcerated since I was 23. In 2008, the recession was going on and I was in a dark time in my life so I increasingly used drugs & alcohol as a coping mechanism. In 2008, I was arrested for a string of armed robberies. Ultimately I received a 36 years sentence in which I have to serve 30 of. No-one was physically hurt in the crimes and I have no previous record besides traffic tickets & a vandalism charge as a minor. I’m happy to say I’ve been clean for 12 years. After experiencing how drugs & alcohol quickly destroyed my life I decided it’s not for me. I can’t control myself with tat stuff nor does it appeal to me anymore. My incarceration has been a roller coaster. For the first ten years I was active in all the bad stuff prison has to offer. In 2018, while I was in the hole, I deeply reflected on my values and what I want in this life, I formulated a plan to re-invent myself and the first stop was to drop out of the gang stuff. In retrospect I wish I would have done it sooner. .
