🖋 Artist's bio

I’m 49 and I’m from Rhode Island. I am doing a 15-year federal bid for bank robbery. I’m currently at Otisville Federal Correctional Facility in New York with 18 months left to go. People always ask me how long I’ve been drawing. Did I go to Art school? Do I draw on the street? My answer is almost always the same. I have been drawing for as long as I can remember. Never made it to Art school, and haven’t drawn on the streets since high school. Saying this always makes me sad ‘cause growing up all I ever did was draw. I wanted nothing more than to go to Rhode Island School of Design. Unfortunately, all my dreams of art school were pulled out from under me when I was 15. I disclosed to my parents that I am transgender. They disowned me and put me into the state’s foster care system. But, Art has always remained my passion, my love, and most times, my escape. It’s such a great feeling being able to just get lost while I’m creating a drawing. Better yet, the joy you see it brings to other inmates and their families. It’s a great feeling knowing something I created can bring such happiness in a place like this. Art simply means the world to me. It has always kept me going, has always called me. I never tire of it, trying to learn as much as I can about all aspects, not just the different techniques. I push myself all the while and share my knowledge with other aspiring artists that I meet in prison. I plan on trying to make a living with my artwork. It probably won’t be easy, but they say it’s never work if you are doing what you love. .
